Monaco’s old town stretches across the entire “Rock”, home to the Prince’s Palace and the Oceanographic Museum, famous for its marvellous coral reef, multicolored fish and spectacular rays and sharks.

Discover the Var hinterland
and Provencal villages

Between Fréjus and Draguignan, among vineyards and forests, the village of Le Muy smells of Provence. Especially on market days (Sunday and Thursday mornings), when its central square is covered with colorful stalls selling fruit, vegetables and seafood, against a backdrop of lavender scents and local flavors that are sure to tantalize your senses.

But Le Muy is also an excellent starting point for discovering the Var hinterland and Provencal landscapes: colorful markets with southern scents, the Sainte-Croix lake and its perched villages such as Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the vertiginous gorges where the emerald waters of the Verdon meander, the Maures massif and the Estérel massif, and so on.

The Var is famous for its many Provencal villages, which are great places to stroll around. Each of these villages has its own identity and traditions. Places steeped in history that offer an idyllic setting for total immersion in Provencal culture.

When it comes to sightseeing, you’ll be spoilt for choice with Romanesque churches, medieval castles and local museums. Don’t miss the traditional festivals that enliven these villages throughout the year. These events are the perfect opportunity to discover local folklore and meet the locals.

As you stroll through these villages, you can also admire local craftsmen at work. Numerous workshops open their doors to visitors, allowing them to discover ancestral skills such as pottery, basketry and wine production.

Fayence

Among the villages of Provence, don’t miss :

  • Fayence, a charming hilltop village overlooking the plain of the Var hinterland. Its narrow streets lead to the top of the hill where the castle once stood. Fayence is one of the many charming villages dotted around Provence, such as Seillans, perched on the slopes of Mont Auzière, Callian and its castle or Montauroux, famous for its chapel with painted wood panels.
  • The beautiful avenues surrounding the old town of Draguignan, a city in the Var hinterland, invite you to stroll in the shade of the plane trees. In the narrow streets that wind their way through the historic quarter, you’ll discover a carved porch, a square steeped in history or an old house. The Tour de l’Horloge, St Michel church and the old chapels are well worth a visit, as is the Musée des Arts et Traditions Provençales.
  • Sheltered by its ramparts, which can be crossed via the Porte Marine, built in the 17ᵉ century, the old town of Antibes, which draws a labyrinth of alleys leading to the discovery of a heritage that testifies to the rich history of this Mediterranean coastal town and in particular its cathedral, its high Saracen towers from the 12ᵉ century and its medieval castle.

Finally, growing vines is nothing new in Provence. The Romans were already cultivating vines 2,000 years ago. Around Les Arcs, vines are still omnipresent today, the experience of the monks of the Middle Ages having enabled them to develop this culture and produce more and more wine. Thanks to this tradition, Provence now produces excellent wines, especially the rosé for which it is famous. These vineyards provide the ideal backdrop for a stroll.
